What would a sentence be without punctuation? Floating without intention, tone or pause, it would fail to carry an impact and leave the reader wanting more. Decor is not unlike a sentence in that—it needs punctuation to really make it come alive. Michael Kors famously said, “I’ve always thought of accessories as the exclamation point to a woman’s outfit,” and the same goes for accessories in the home. We view our accent tables as the jewelry in the room—they are the impact.
In order to create the perfect punctuation in your home, what considerations need to be made? Design, texture, color, profile and scale all play an important role—but what it all comes down to is balance. Even more important is personality, because accessories are where the fun comes in, and allow you to make your home truly “you.”
Read on for our tips for decorating with the “Juniper” eye.
Bringing in the Human Touch
When it comes to decorating, we believe that there are no “rules.” Instead, there are feelings.
The entire line of Juniper is inspired by the beauty of the human form and the individuality of every person. Given that, we believe that design is about what speaks to you as an individual.
We like to start decorating a room with an inspiration piece, perhaps it’s art or a special piece of furniture, and build upon that. Colors, patterns, shape and dimension should not be chosen by set of prescribed design rules, but instead by the room itself and your personal interests.
A few of our favorite “inspiration” pieces to begin a room with are the J5 Leather Desk; it’s masculine and feminine juxtaposition and antique hardware have so many options for interpretation, the J28 desk with its Art Deco curves and rich materials, and the J31 cabinet, given its exquisite three-dimensional detail and natural color palette.
All’s Well That Ends Well
End tables are one of our favorite room accessories. They are highly functional in a room (where else would you rest your drink?), but we here at Juniper believe end tables are also a place to have a little fun, and possibly even create an element of surprise.
This is precisely the intention behind the J7 side table—to bring a playful element of surprise to a room. This piece was inspired by playing with the human form and exaggerating scale, and provides the perfect punctuation to a sectional couch or reading chair.
End tables are also the perfect place to add a little pop of glam, like with the J11 Branches Table and J17. Bringing natural elements into a room create a sense of calm in a space, while metallic elements create an elevated level of taste and visual interest.
Little Pops of Personality
When it comes to the notions and accessories atop fixtures, it’s important to have fun, but remember to keep balance in mind. Placing decorative elements in groups and at varying heights is typically most pleasing to the eye. Books are best when mixed with other design elements—try topping a few coffee table books with an accent piece. We also recommend choosing your decorative pieces intentionally so as not to create a cluttered, over-designed space.
